The farm is in a Higher Level Stewardship (HLS) scheme. This is a land management scheme managed by Natural England which deals with more complex land management issues and is tailored to individual local needs. The HLS scheme began in 2010 following the detection of Corn Buntings at the farm.
Each year, circa 3 hectares of wild bird seed mix is sown for the birds to feed upon over Winter. The designated area is then re-sown in the Spring to provide a dedicated feed area for all birds on the farm with a bias towards the preferred diet of the Corn Bunting. The bird population and range of species at the farm is regularly surveyed by Durham Bird Club.
